USMLE Step 1, Biochemistry and Genetics: PreTest Self-Assessment and Review (Pre-Test Basic Science Series), Cheryl Ingram-Smith and Kerry Smith, 2004

Paperback: 384 pages
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Medical; 2 edition (August 3, 2004)
Language: English

I used this book while studying for the GRE in Biochemistry. The questions are detailed and hard. If you are a wimp who slept in class - this book will kick you. You will feel really low... For preparing for the GRE or the USMLE with their new explanded biochemistry format which is getting heavier into genetics and biochemistry this book will be the new Q-bank you will have to have. My only issue is I was use to using Lange, Appleton & Lange, and Kaplan q-bank books where you get 50 questions set of questions most of the time. This book has a bit different format by subject. So a 50 question timed set may force you to jump around. I am still working the book for the USMLE.

This one-of-a-kind test prep guide helps you to test your knowledge of essential biochemistry and genetics concepts for the USMLE Step 1; practice with 500 USMLE Step 1-style questions with referenced answers; review explanations for right and wrong answers; and build confidence, skills, and knowledge.

An effective way to use this PreTest is to allow yourself 1 minute to answer each question in a given chapter. As you proceed, indicate your answer beside each question. By following this suggestion, you approximate the time limits imposed by the USMLE Step 1 examination. After you finish going through the questions in the section, spend as much time as you need verifying your answers and carefully reading the explanations provided. Pay special attention to the explanations for the questions you answered incorrectly—but read every explanation. The authors of this material have designed the explanations to reinforce and supplement the information tested by the questions. If you feel you need further information about the material covered, consult and study the text or online references indicated. The high-yield facts in this book are provided to facilitate rapid review of biochemistry and genetics. Key concepts and diagrams are arranged before each section, and it is anticipated that the reader will use the key concepts as a “memory jog” before proceeding through the questions.(From the book’s introduction)

My comments:
This book, which was prepared for USMLE Step 1 can be thought as a preparation guide. The fact that it was reviewed by students who have recently passed the exam keeps the data updated. Also, the Pretest series like this book, consists of a “high-yield” fact section which reinforces key concepts about topics. Therefore I believe it is helpful for the USMLE step 1.
