CONRAD STATE 30
J1 VISA WAIVER PROGRAM

Approximately 1,000 J1 visa waivers are issued each year to physicians who agree to practice in underserved areas in the United States. This is a tremendous increase from the 70 J1 visa waivers issued in 1990, and certainly verifies the extent of which many communities across the United States continue to face severe difficulties in attracting U.S. physicians to meet their respective health care needs. At present, there are approximately 3,200 foreign-born physicians practicing in underserved areas – compared to only 2,000 American physicians practicing in underserved areas.

The Conrad State 30 J1 Visa Waiver program is indeed the most common method of obtaining a J1 visa waiver for physicians willing to enter into a 3 year employment contact in a designated health professional shortage area (HPSA) or medically undeserved area (MUA). The Conrad 30 program provides for the approval of up to 30 J1 visa waivers for each US State. Each U.S. State, by regulation, has enacted their own specific requirements that a foreign physician must meet in order to qualify for consideration for inclusion in this program.

Alabama

Georgia

Michigan

Notes: Michigan tries to select 16 rural placements and 14 urban placements. It is not necessary to have an employer sponsor in order to request an application packet. South Dakota
