Asistanlığın ilk yılında özellikle yabancı mezunların çok faydalanacağı bir kitap olarak yorumlar yapılmış. Kitabın başında tavsiye olarak yazılmış kısmı aynen buraya da aktardım.
Keys to Survival
…Or how not to get voted off of the island…
.Don’t panic.
.Take care of your patients. You are finally using your education and training.
.Be kind to the nurses and ancillary staff. They can make your life much beter… or much worse.
.Sleep when you can.
.Remember to eat.
.Wear comfortable shoes.
.Call your significant other on-call.
.Verify everything (labs, x-rays, ECGs, etc.) yourself.
.Ask questions and ask for help. Believe it or not, you are not expected to know everything.
.Call for consultations on your patients early in the day and have a specific question you want answered from the consultant. This is always appreciated.
.Start thinking about discharge/disposition planning from day 1.
.Dictate discharge summaries the day the patient leaves.
.When generating a differential diagnosis, look for an etiology in VITAMIN E: Vascular, Infection/Inflammatory, Trauma, Acquired/Autoimmune, Metabolic/Medications, Inherited/Iatrogenic/Idiopathic, Neoplastic, Environmental.
.Work hard, stay enthusiastic, and maintain interest!
